bwin Argentina SA, a subsidiary of bwin Interactive Entertainment AG, has been ordered to close down its Argentinean sports betting site by the Court of First Instance in Buenos Aries for operating without a licence.
According to Public Prosecutor Martín Lapadú, his office received numerous complaints following the launch and extensive advertising of bwin.com.ar, including from the National Lottery Commission and the Argentinean Football Association.
In a decision published Friday, Judge María Fernanda Botana said that bwin Argentina SA, as well as numerous media which advertised the sports betting site, were suspected of violating Articles 116 and 117 of the ‘Código Contravencional’. Breaching the codes carries a possible sentence of up to 45 days imprisonment and a fine of up to 60,000 pesos.
The Public Prosecutors office is also investigating Directors of the Provincial Institute of Lotteries and Casinos in Misiones, which granted bwin a provincial license under which it operates.
bwin’s licence from the provincial authority does not authorize it to operate or advertise nationally.
According to Judge Botana, the order to close down the Argentinian bwin site will be formalised in the coming days.
