Greece and the Netherlands face legal action from the European Commission if they fail to open up their markets to internet gambling companies. The EU's executive have taken similar action against other nations and says arguments that restrictions are needed to protect consumers are only valid if applied to domestic and foreign gaming companies equally.
A municipal court in Denmark has ruled that poker is a game of skill. They say tournaments are not contravening Danish law.
On a related note; Frederik Hostrup, president of the Danish Poker Association, has been acquitted on charges of "organizing illegal gambling events". According to Hostrup's lawyer, "there are between 200,000 and 300,000 Danes who play poker at least once a week and more than half a million who play regularly".

The World Poker Store Inc. Announces "The Palace" June 2008 Opening in Loudi, China
SHENZHEN, CHINA--(Marketwire - February 28, 2008) - The World Poker Store (PINKSHEETS: WPKS), with corporate offices in St. Paul, MN, announces the June 2008 opening of its membership-based upscale entertainment center in Loudi, China. The 50,000 square foot facility called "The Palace" will be the first of three locations slated to open this year in China. The Palace offers Affluent Chinese and International clients the opportunity to enjoy World Class Hospitality, Vegas Style nightclubs and Restaurants, a Business Center, VIP amenities and Live Free Roll Texas Hold 'em tournaments.
With projected revenues of $2.5 to $3 Million US, The Palace will open its doors as part of the Loudi business district on the 4th and 5th floors of the newly renovated and landmarked HuiTain Office Tower and Shopping Center. Dubbed one of the top 4 most livable cities in China, Loudi, a city of 4.5 million people, is located in the Hunan Province and is home to one of China's fortune 100 companies and largest steel mills Qianan Liangang Yanshan Iron & Steel.
On any given day more than 200 buyers from Europe and the US come to Loudi to tour the steel mill and contract for products. This is where The Palace will capitalize on the need for upscale entertainment for the city's international clientele. "The Loudi facility will be a good complement to the 25,000 square foot freestanding Palace location already being developed in the city of Sanya on Hainan Island," said World Poker Store CEO Chuck Chastain. "The support for our opening in Loudi has been overwhelming.
We already have offers from business groups and government offices to purchase large blocks of Palace Membership packages," he added. "The cities in China are growing at such a fast pace that businessmen and business travelers are visiting with more frequency and The Palace intends to offer those travelers as well as local businesses a complete list of high level services and amenities that are currently not available.
China offers great potential and with the June opening in Loudi WPS will be well on its way to turning potential into profit," he said further. The World Poker Store's wholly owned subsidiary Shenzhen WPS Entertainment Development Co. Ltd. is currently in negotiations with multiple cities to open additional Palace locations through out China.
With offices in St. Paul, MN, Fort Myers, FL, Federal Way, WA, Amsterdam, NL and Shenzhen, China The World Poker Store Inc. continues to bring Free Texas Hold 'em and World Class poker entertainment to the masses. Senators speak out for changes to UIGEA
Senators John E. Sununu [R-NH] and Pete Domenici [R-NM]are seeking changes to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act aimed at clarifying the rules.
The following letter, sent to Secretary Paulson and Chairman Bernanke, clearly defines their position...
"Dear Secretary Paulson and Chairman Bernanke,
The effectiveness of any law is reliant on sound implementation. Federal regulations are intended to provide clarity and guidance for those subjected to their reach. The value of such regulations is to prevent non-compliance while minimizing wasted effort, time, and cost by those being regulated. Clear rules also promote interstate commerce by facilitating uniform enforcement.
In this spirit, your agencies have an opportunity to provide additional guidance in the implementation of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of2006 (UIGEA). While the October Notice of Proposed Rulemaking contains certain guidance for the regulated community, it leaves sufficient ambiguity as to what sort of transactions are to be blocked. In failing to provide more detail, the proposed rules would inordinately burden every bank, credit union, credit card company, money transmitting business and payment system in the country, leading to non-uniform compliance and confusion. This issue is particularly important, as most federal and state gambling laws predate the Internet, and are less than specific as to their application to particular practices or circumstances.
The extensive public comments received on this issue highlight the likelihood that risk-averse financial institutions will simply choose to block every transaction that may be interpreted or could resemble gambling, whether legal or not. Knowing that this is not your intention, we write to urge that any final rules contain a list of restricted transactions and instances that are covered by the law and the corresponding rules.
As an alternative, we suggest you consider separating the rules into those forms of activities for which there is settled federal law (i.e., defined by the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA)) and those that are not. This would allow immediate implementation for known activities, while providing greater time to determine what other transactions are to be captured.
We thank you in advance for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Sen. John E. Sununu [R-NH]
Sen. Pete Domenici [R-NM]"

PPA Spends $900,000
According to a story released by the Associated Press yesterday, the Poker Players Alliance spent $900K lobbying the US Government in 2007.
Here's the AP press release:
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Poker Players Alliance spent $900,000 in 2007 to lobby the federal government on online- gambling legislation.
The group, which says it represents 800,000 poker enthusiasts nationwide, lobbied on a bill that would exempt poker from a law that restricts online gambling, and for legislation that would regulate the Internet gaming industry, according to a disclosure form posted online Feb. 15 by the Senate's public records office. The alliance spent $780,000 lobbying on those issues in the second half of 2007.
It's legal to play poker online, but the law made it illegal for domestic banks and credit-card companies to process payments to online gambling businesses. The act, passed in 2006, bars financial institutions from handling gambling transactions, with exceptions for lotteries, horse racing and fantasy sports.
The Poker Players Alliance is chaired by former New York Sen. Alfonse D'Amato.
Lobbyists are required to disclose activities that could influence members of the executive and legislative branches, under a federal law enacted in 1995.

Antigua Close to Attaining Whitelist Status
Gambling911 is reporting that Antigua is very close to attaining "Whitelist" status from the UK. Once they have been approved, gambling portals based in Antigua will be allowed to advertise their poker and casino sites there. This is very good news for the online gambling industry. We'll be keeping our ears open and fingers crossed on this one.

Make-A-Wish Charity Tournament at Carbon Poker
A new friend of mine runs a monthly charity tournament on Carbon Poker with proceeds going to Make-A-Wish Foundation. Make-A-Wish is a charity close to my heart. My niece suffers from a debilitating disease and a few years ago Make-A-Wish sent her and her parents to New York City where she met a number of celebrities including Rosie O'Donnel. It was a life changing experience for her and gave her the will, attitude and hope to continue fighting her disease.
The tournaments run on the first Saturday of each month. Kudos to Carbon Poker for hosting this event for The House of Poker Blues.
I urge everyone to jump in and support my friend Earl from House of Poker Blues in his quest. As one of Earl's good friends said recently; "We usually get around 50 players in this every month but it would be great to see the numbers rise and raise ALOT more money for the kids. No matter where you finish at the end of the tournament you win because half of the money goes to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Stop and think for even half a minute; how would you feel if that $2 from your entry that goes to the foundation is all that was needed to make it possible for a gravely ill child to do that one thing they wish to do before they die? Personally that thought almost takes my breath away!"
Here are the tournament details:

Todd Brunson gives some back & Poker Dream in trouble?
Todd Brunson is one of my favorite poker pros. He plays solid poker whether he's in a tournament or grinding it out in the big cash games he likes so much. Todd never gets too fancy, even when the TV cameras are covering his play. He sticks to his game. To me, that's the sign of a true pro.
Todd Brunson doesn't feel like he has to live up to his father's reputation either. He's proven that he's his own man. Doyle must be very proud of his son.
Another thing I admire about Todd is his willingness to give back to the community. In March Todd is hosting a charity poker event to benefit Camp Okizu, a retreat for children with cancer. The tournament is a $300 buy-in No Limit Holdem event and takes place on March 8 in Santa Clara, California.
The tournament is open to the public so if you're a decent poker player and would like to support this worthy cause, get out there and play. Todd is giving away autograped photos of himself while supplies last.
Other poker celebrities attending the event include; Hoyt Corkins, Cyndy Violette and Mark Sief. Matt Savage will be the MC for the tournament.
Todd represents Doyles Room, a US friendly poker site named after the legend himself, Doyle Brunson. Play online against Todd, Doyle and other famous pros at Doyles Room. Read our review of Doyles Room here.
The online poker world is still rebounding from the Absolute Poker super user scandal and the allegations of similar cheating at Ultimate Bet (owned by Absolute). Added to these scandals was the recent collapse of the DGS Poker Network. Now we have rumors of yet another site going down the tubes. Poker Dream, a US friendly network, appears to be in the midst of collapse. The network has locked out all their "skin" owners and closed it's forum. It appears imminent that the site is doomed. I have a couple hundred bucks sitting on the network, I guess it'll be gone forever... I'll keep you posted as new developments surface.

Gambling study: genders gamble for different reasons
A recent Canadian study into why men and women gamble shows distinct gender specific differences. According to Dr Heather Chalmers, a Brock University researcher;
Women
* gamble for social reasons
* are less likely to indulge in high risk gambling
* are more likely to play Bingo, lotteries and slots.
Men
* see high risk gambling as more masculine or macho
* like to demonstrate that they are in control
* are more likely to bet their prized possessions, drugs, smokes, girlfriends, stocks and bonds
According to Dr. Chalmers "males were betting their girlfriends, so we included sexual favors in the list".
Men were more likely to bet on the horses. Bingo was the only form of gambling where the women outnumber the men.
Men gamble to win while the ladies gamble for fun, a reason to hang out with friends.
I have to tell you, I play poker against almost as many women as men. The women I play against are hardcore poker players, they're in it to win!

WPT slims down for season 7
CardPlayer.com is reporting that the World Poker Tour (WPT) is slimming down their season seven schedule from twenty events to fourteen.
The WPT events will all be held in the U.S. except The North American Poker Championships which will be held in Niagara Falls, Canada.
The reason for the reduced schedule is financial, the WPTE claims to be losing millions of dollars. They claim that until the U.S. regulates poker, they will continue to struggle.
